After a grueling day at work and running a million errands around the house, you’ll agree, nothing is more blissful than flopping into that inviting couch and watching your favourite soap uninterrupted. And surely, you wouldn’t want to trade this precious time for something as mundane as exercising – though, not being able work out is perennially working on your mind.
But, what if we told you that TV time can double up as a fitness regimen too! And also, that you don’t require any fancy or sophisticated equipment! Just the empty floor space in front of the TV is enough to burn up the extra calories and banish the belly bulge. So there, you have a happy combination of your favourite TV show and that much needed exercise!
Here’s how to sneak in those quick ‘n’ easy, slimming exercises while surfing channels.
Push-ups: Push-ups are a great way to build and tone your chest, shoulders, arms and back muscles. You can quickly squeeze in this between commercial breaks.
Good old fashioned belly crunches: Do 25 sit-ups twice during the commercial breaks, so you don’t miss the good parts. Just remember to reach your head up toward the ceiling and not towards the TV.
Jogging: This is one of the easiest ways to lose calories. As you watch your favourite program, break into spot jogging. You can do as much as you want to. The more, the better!
Dance: It’s an absolutely fun way to lose weight. Turn on a music channel and start grooving to the songs. You can easily burn up to 130-150 calories, dancing for just half an hour.
Toe and wrist exercises: While sitting on the couch, raise your toes while keeping your heels firmly on the ground. Hold for a count of five and repeat. It is a great exercise for your calves.
To stretch the thigh muscle, raise the knee of one leg to the chest and hold for a count five. Repeat with the opposite leg.
To strengthen your forearm, rotate wrist clockwise and counter clockwise. Repeat with alternate arm.
Skipping: Skipping is a great cardio exercise and an excellent way to stay in shape. Get out your ropes and skip your way to health … while skipping the commercials.
Squat: This works great for your legs and hips. Snatch a few minutes during the ad breaks and do this as many times as you can. Stand straight and keep your feet apart and your hands on the hips. Keep your back perfectly straight and look straight ahead; bend your knees slowly as if you were going to sit back in a chair. Wait for a few seconds before returning to the standing position. Repeat as many times as you can
