Travelling with an infant can be a pleasure or a disaster - depending on how well prepared you are. For baby, stepping out of the home means a disrupted routine and adapting to a new environment. It also means that you will be leaving most of the baby gear at home.

As traveling with baby requires careful planning and packing, here are 10 time-tested tips to ensure that you have a safe, happy trip:

Stick to the Schedule
Change can be frightening to little ones, so to make your newborn feel comfortable, try and stick to the schedule. Observe mealtimes and naptimes whenever possible.

Stock up on Baby Essentials
Fill your diaper bag with diapers, wipes, snacks, beverages, clean clothing and baby's favourite small toys. You may need them any time. Take advantage of handy disposables like wet wipes, bibs and placemats.

Stay Flexible
Keep baby's comfort in mind when planning your travel itinerary. A whole day of sightseeing or shopping could be too much for your little one, so take a cue from your child and remain flexible.

Protect your Baby
If you are planning to spend time outdoors, don't forget the sun protection and insect repellants - hats, sun block, mosquito net and a first aid kit.

Travelling by Car
If you have a long drive ahead of you, you could plan your departure to coincide with naptime, as most children are lulling to sleep by the travel motion. For older kids, take along an activity or a toy box filled with crayons, colouring books and games.

For Air Travel
As rapid changes in cabin pressure can cause your infant's ears to 'pop', you could ease the pressure by feeding just after take-off or before landing. Keep drinks and pacifiers handy - as sucking helps reduce sensitivity. You could also buy soft ear filters specially designed for babies as these will regulate the air pressure and prevent discomfort.

Plan Ahead
For convenience sake, it is better if you can take your own lightweight stroller or a convertible backpack/ stroller along with you. If that is not possible, arrange for the crib, high chair or car seat to be waiting for you when you arrive.
